Energetic, enthusiastic consultant. Clearly explained treatment management program, risks and possible benefits. Relaxed and positive patient communication manner. Excellent lab team who keep you comfortable and supported throughout the procedure. Lower paid nursing staff on the day ward are very professional and caring, day and night. However there is a BUT. Senior nursing day ward staff are appalling in so many ways. It is also obvious that management do not support Professional staff as organisation and some of ward procedures fall very short of the mark. Fortunately have only been short stay in patient. Nutrition is not fit for purpose. As a medical experience, extremely positive

Response from Dr James Wilkinson

Thank you very much for your kind feedback. Please note this site is dedicated to feedback about the doctor in specific that you saw (me in this case) and not intended for general comments about the team. To the best of my knowledge the only people you routinely look at this website are doctors interested in the value of patient feedback on themselves or patients. Feedback about other aspects of hospital care such as nursing, ward cleanliness, food etc is VERY important. I would encourage you and any patient or relative to always feedback such general comments to the hospital. This is best done by contacting the patient support services (see the following website for details: https://www.uhs.nhs.uk/ContactUs/Tellusaboutyourexperience.aspx). Alternative methods include directly writing to the ward senior nurse/manager or the Chief Executive. Thanks again to you and all other patients for taking the time to give me feedback. I read and take on board all comments although regret to say am not able to respond to all comments. All this feedback is seen and discussed at my annual appraisal and helps me improve the care I give. Best wishes, James Wilkinson

Dr Wilkinson was personable and spoke in plain English. He asked me if there was anything else I was concerned about at the end of the consultation and I felt that he was really interested in my wellbeing.

I found Dr James Wilkinson made me feel very at ease from start of my appointment. He was very professional but very sympthectic. He had a very reassuring nature and made me feel very comfortable talking to him.

I have had one consultation with Dr J Wilkinson and found him attentive and considerate . He made me feel comfortable and although I was his last patient to be seen in his clinic , at no time did I feel rushed . I feel confident in his care . I shall need further tests /treatment and expect to receive the same standard of care , from Dr J. Wilkinson and his team .

I am a scientist, now retired, and capable of assessing professional persons in scientific including medical fields as I have done many times throughout my career, and based on my first and only meeting with Dr Wilkinson I can say that he inspires confidence and is well capable of making a genuine empathetic connection with his patients, as indeed he did with me. He listened patiently and carefully to my account of myself and my symptoms and gave me what I consider to be fair and good advice as to changes I should make to my life-style. I of course cannot comment on whether he is bang up-to-date with his specialist cardiac knowledge except to say that I definitely feel that he is, and I certainly felt that I could trust him.

Profile

Dr James Richard Wilkinson is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist (heart specialist) based at Southampton and Lymington. He previously did procedure lists at Salisbury (2011-2014).

His particular area of expertise is Coronary Intervention. He regularly treats heart attack patients as well as more stable patients. This involves fixing the arteries that supply your heart with small balloons and metal scaffolds called 'stents'. He specialises in doing this through the artery in the wrist (radial artery) as it is safer and more comfortable for patients. He has a particular interest in opening arteries that have been blocked a long time (chronic total occlusions). He also has a specialist interest in a specialist procedure to treat high blood pressure (called renal denervation) and has set up this new service in Southampton. He also inserts pacemakers and does angiograms.

In addition to his procedure lists he also see's patients in clinic for evaluation of any symptoms that could be due to heart disease such as: breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations and blackouts. He is particularly interested in angina and new procedures to help this. He participates in a busy on-call rota for Southampton's heart attack service and does ward rounds. A majority of his work is NHS but he does see some patients privately at Southampton and Lymington. He participates in local research and education on a national level.
